Chapter History

The history of the Theta Gamma Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is not only rich but inspiring, and cultivating. The chartering of Theta Gamma at the University of South Carolina began with a meeting between Mary Soloman and Olivia Johnson of the Gamma Nu Omega Chapter and an interested USC student, Ernestine "Tena" Walker, in 1972. By the end of the spring semester in 1972, Miss Tena Walker became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

In the Fall of 1972, Walker formed an interest group of 26 women after making an announcement during a student organizational meeting. These young women would become initiated into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. after a year of learning information and creating a community project.Through their work and the dedication of Gamma Nu Omega member, Edna Young, Theta Gamma was chartered on November 3, 1973.

May the history of our chapter continue to grow and flourish!
